Bevel gear generator for miter and bevel gear pairs
Give the module, this gear's tooth count and its mate's, and the shaft angle — the generator sets both pitch cones from them, so the two gears you make meet at a common apex and mesh. The teeth are our spur gears' hob-generated involute, laid on each gear's back cone (Tredgold's method) and running straight to the apex.
- The default gear exports as 85 exact faces: 40 tooth flanks, and the tip and root lands as 40 true cones that all point at the pitch-cone apex — straight-bevel geometry, not a stack of slices — plus 3 flat faces and the hub and bore as true cylinders.
STEP AP214 in millimetres, exact B-rep — it opens directly in SolidWorks, Fusion, FreeCAD, Onshape or Inventor, and goes straight into a CNC quote form. STL for the slicer is one click too.

Every parameter is a link parameter; the link below opens the example part. ChatGPT, Claude or any assistant can write one like it from the parameter list (names, units, ranges) at: parameter list (JSON)
Press “AI edit” in the generator and say what to change — a keyway, holes, a different shape. The AI edits the part's model.py and it rebuilds in your browser, with undo. A few edits a day are free without signing in; to keep the result or go further, copy it into your models and continue with the AI agent.
For bigger changes, several rounds, or a part you want to keep: copy it into your models (free account). The Forgent3D AI agent reads the model.py, edits it, rebuilds it and checks the result itself.
1.Open the generator — the model builds right in your browser, nothing to install.
2.Tune dimensions and options in the parameter panel; the geometry rebuilds live in 3D.
3.Export STL / STEP for printing — or ask the AI agent for features beyond the sliders.
FAQ
How do I mount a pair of bevel gears?
Their pitch cones must share one apex, where the two shafts cross. With the defaults (module 1.5, 20/20 at 90°) the apex sits 15 mm above the gear's large end — 28 mm above the bottom of its 13 mm hub.
Which way up should I print a bevel gear?
On its back — hub down, teeth up — as makers print them; one maker who printed small bevels teeth-down on a ring had teeth shear off. No supports needed; 3–6 walls, PETG for gears that work.
Why does it make one gear at a time?
Each change rebuilds the gear in your browser, and building only the one you are looking at keeps that quick. Both gears come from the same page: swap TEETH and MATE_TEETH for the mate.
How do I make a pair of 90° bevel gears with a 1:2 ratio?
Make both from the same page: https://www.forgent3d.com/en/generators/bevel-gear-generator?TEETH=15&MATE_TEETH=30 is the pinion and https://www.forgent3d.com/en/generators/bevel-gear-generator?TEETH=30&MATE_TEETH=15 its mate — KHK's stock 1:2 pair. Mount them so their cone apexes meet where the shafts cross.
Can I make miter gears for shafts at 60° or 120°?
Yes, set the shaft angle: https://www.forgent3d.com/en/generators/bevel-gear-generator?SHAFT_ANGLE=60 — KHK sells angular miters at 45°, 60° and 120°, and the generator takes anything from 45° to 120°.
Can I sell prints made with these generators?
Yes. Models you generate and the STL / STEP files you export are yours: print them, sell the prints, or use them in a product. No attribution to Forgent3D is required.
